A giant paralyzed by hackers

Jaguar and Land Rover production remains suspended after a massive cyberattack in early September crippled the company’s IT systems.

The consequences are severe: halted assembly lines in the UK, India, China and Slovakia, more than 1,000 vehicles unbuilt daily, and losses estimated at up to £5 million per day.

Ongoing investigations and data theft concerns

British police are investigating to track down the hackers, while Jaguar Land Rover fears sensitive customer data may have been stolen.

The breach, traced back to SAP Netweaver, allowed the attackers in, but it’s still unclear which information was accessed or whether a ransom demand was made.

Extended halt and job risks

Production has been suspended until September 24, and according to reports by The Telegraph, the shutdown could last until November though JLR has denied this.

Meanwhile, the Unite union has urged the UK government to provide urgent support for affected families, warning of possible closures and layoffs.

The company’s statement

In an official note, Jaguar Land Rover stated:

“We have taken this decision while forensic investigations continue on the cyber incident and as we assess the different stages of a controlled recovery of our global operations, which will take time.”

Since September 2, the company has been rebuilding compromised systems, but the timeline for full recovery remains uncertain.
