A cyber shock for Italian journalism
A violent cyberattack has hit the Rome headquarters of the Lazio Journalists’ Association, paralyzing systems and shutting down internet access for hours. The incident was discovered last Wednesday, right after the summer closure.
President Guido D’Ubaldo confirmed it was a “next-generation ransomware”, allegedly carried out by a Russian hacker group.
Sensitive data at risk
The major concern is the possible exposure of sensitive data belonging to more than 20,000 registered members. These records were stored within the compromised systems and may have been accessed or stolen.
Investigations underway
A formal complaint was filed with the Italian Postal Police, which launched an investigation. The National Cyber Security Agency and the Italian Data Protection Authority were also notified.
A warning sign for institutions
This attack highlights the fragility of Italian institutions when facing advanced cyberthreats. Experts stress the need for stronger cyber defense strategies, continuous updates, and staff training to prevent future incidents.
