The recent agreement between the Ministry of Education and Merit (MIM) and the National Cyber Security Agency (ACN) represents a significant step forward in digital and cyber education in Italy.

This three-year protocol aims to raise awareness among schools, families, and students about the risks and opportunities of the digital world, promoting fundamental skills to face the challenges of digital transformation

A protocol for the digital future

The agreement MIM and ACN, signed by Minister Giuseppe Valditara and the General Director of the National Cyber Security Agency, Bruno Frattasi, aligns with the national cyber security strategy. It has a dual goal: to provide tools to address digital threats and to foster informed citizenship through the integration of new skills in Italian schools.

The agreement has a duration of three years, including joint communication activities to raise public awareness. Key focuses include the responsible use of technology, digital civic education, and the promotion of best practices for online behavior.

Training and educational pathways for schools

The protocol includes tailored training programs for students, teachers, and families. Specifically:

  • Students
They will learn the fundamental rules of cyber security, from identifying digital threats to protecting their digital identity
  • Teachers
They will receive support to integrate digital citizenship into school curriculums, with innovative materials and specialized courses.
  • Parents
They will be involved to better understand online risks and promote a safe digital environment for their children.

The ultimate goal is to make the digital citizenship charter a practical tool for students and families.

The digital future

Cyber security and digital citizenship

Cyber security training will become an integral part of school curriculums. The Ministry of Education and Merit has decided to include topics such as cyberbullying, personal data protection, and managing digital environments within civic education frameworks.

This ensures digital security becomes a core, cross-disciplinary competence for everyone—not just experts.

Why digital education is a priority

The agreement between the Ministry of Education and ACN addresses an urgent need: preparing new generations to navigate an increasingly interconnected world. Digital threats, such as phishing or hacking attacks, can only be managed with adequate preparation.

Minister Valditara emphasized how alarming phenomena, including early access to inappropriate content or cyberbullying, require a structural and shared response.

A unified strategy for Italian schools

The National Cyber Security Agency and MIM will collaborate to help schools adopt secure digital technologies and implement best practices for data protection. This will not only assist students but also enhance the skills of technicians essential to driving the digital transformation of educational institutions.

Additionally, events and competitions on cyber security themes will spark students’ interest in STEM disciplines, aiming to shape the professionals of tomorrow.

To conclude..

The MIM-ACN agreement represents a crucial milestone in building a safer and more informed digital society.

By integrating cyber security into school programs and committing to inclusive digital citizenship, Italy aims to develop citizens and professionals capable of tackling future digital challenges with competence and responsibility.
