A single breach, but with widespread consequences

On February 25, 2025, WindTre experienced an unauthorized access to a system used by its authorized resellers.

Although the breach was limited to one store, the company confirmed that personal information such as names, addresses, and contact details may have been compromised.

WindTre acted swiftly by notifying the Italian Data Protection Authority, as required under Article 34 of the GDPR, and by reinforcing its internal security protocols.

Data leaked, phishing attacks likely

The technical investigation confirmed that hackers may have accessed or extracted personal data.

This could now be exploited for phishing attacks. These attacks may come through email, phone, SMS, or messaging apps, which aim to obtain other sensitive data or push victims to perform dangerous actions, such as clicking on malicious links or providing passwords.

WindTre has issued a set of safety guidelines to help users detect fraud and stay protected, crucial in these situations.

How to protect your digital identity

WindTre’s key recommendations include:

  • Always verify the authenticity of any message or call;
  • Immediately report fake social media profiles impersonating you;
  • Use strong, unique passwords with special characters;
  • Frequently change your credentials;
  • Enable two-factor authentication wherever possible.

A dedicated hotline (800591854) has been activated for assistance (10 AM–7 PM daily), along with existing channels like 159 and the Data Protection Officer’s email (dataprotectionofficer@windtre.it).

The real takeaway: no one is immune

While WindTre’s quick response helped limit the damage, this cyber incident is a wake-up call: even major providers can fall victim. Protecting your personal data is a daily responsibility and it starts with awareness.
